NEW INTERFACE 2E FASE

For ThiemeMeulenhoff publishers I worked as an educational copywriter for New Interface, a range of ESL teaching/learning materials for secondary schools. For various learning levels (B1-C2 English) I wrote source material, exercises, theory and learning strategies, published in print as well as online. I also located external sources and contributed to the themes and content strategies of individual chapters. I enjoyed this project very much because it allowed me to use my own imagination, angles and experiences while writing. The two chapters you see here, one about music and one about volunteering, were close to my heart because I’m passionate about both subjects. In writing them I enjoyed the creative challenge of teaching English in a practical yet fun way, as well as motivating students to think about their own passions and their place in the world.

DOORENGELS

I was also a co-author for DoorEngels, a range of teaching/learning materials for MBO (post-secondary vocational education) with a practical approach to teaching English and a focus on the way the language can be used in daily (working) life. I wrote for different language levels (A2-C1 English), creating source material, audio scripts, exercises, theory and tests, published in print and online. What I loved about this project is that it allowed me to walk a mile in the well-worn shoes of people with very different jobs, and to see how English language skills could enrich their professional lives. ‘Lifelong learning’ was the motto of this teaching/learning resource, one which I wholeheartedly share.

DE OPTIMIST

Essay: IN MIJN VEL

In 2019, I wrote an autobiographical essay about my social anxiety disorder for De Optimist, a Dutch online cultural magazine. I wrote about the healing power of the sea as a constant factor in my life and the role it plays in literature and culture. I’m of the opinion that we can learn a lot from the sea and nature in general—for example, to accept that our own direction and course are not always stable or straightforward. Sometimes we get overwhelmed, and we go under—yet this is where the biggest transformations tend to take place. Embracing change and fluidity in life has been a great help to me personally, and this is something I wanted to pass on to others with this piece.
